Founder and head of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) (1948-1994). He operated as a near deified dictator, established hereditary rule after WWII, and tried to reunify the Korean peninsula during the Korean War (1950-53).

Kim Jong-il

Kim Yong-nam

Kim Il Sung

Identifying North Korea's founder and first leader is what this item is about. Kim Il Sung founded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948 and ruled the country until his death in 1994, shaping a personality cult and establishing a dynastic line that would pass to his son and grandson. He led North Korea through the Korean War era and aimed to reunify the peninsula, pursuing military action from 1950 to 1953. This combination of centralized control, reverence as a leader, and the creation of hereditary rule explains why he fits the description. The other names refer to leaders who came later or held ceremonial roles: Kim Jong-il led after 1994, Kim Yong-nam held a largely ceremonial presidency, and Kim Jong-un is the current leader who began his rule in 2011.
